Sir, – The first questions that should be asked about Galway’s diabolical rush-hour traffic jams are: where are they all going and why are they all going there at this time?
The answer is that many are commuting to work and many are dropping children to schools and they are all going in the same direction at the same time.
As long as jobs and schools are located in city centres, people are going to have to travel into cities to get to them. The reason they drive into the cities is because they live outside the cities, because no-one can afford to live in cities anymore, but still the jobs and schools are located there. So perhaps the answer to city congestion is to start locating the jobs and the schools in the places where people can afford to live.
There’s a thought for our politicians and planners to consider. – Yours, etc,
DAVID DORAN,
