Sir, - Last Monday I took the DART from Glenageary to Booterstown, arriving at Glenageary in time to catch the 11.28 bound for Malahide.
The information panel on the platform indicated that the next train was going to Malahide and this was confirmed in the delay apology over the loud-speaker system - something that has now become routine.
When the train arrived the destination panel on the front read "Howth". In the carriage which I entered only the visual part of the new audio-visual information system was working. This confirmed that the destination was Howth, but I had my doubts, as it also indicated repeatedly that the next station was Killiney even though it had already been passed.
The information panel on the platform in Booterstown again indicated that the train was going to Malahide and this was confirmed by the man in the ticket office, who seemed startled when I informed him of the position and pointed out the potential for confusion.
On my return journey from Booterstown I boarded a train which was supposed to be going to Greystones. The destination panel in front was blank, and though the carriage I entered was equipped with the new audio-visual system neither the audio nor the visual was working.
Far from "getting there", as claimed in the advertisement it seems to me that the people in Iarnrod Eireann don't even know where they are going.
Yours, etc.,
