Sir, – As a female in my 30s, I can say that women of my generation and previous generations have been all too many times subjected to inappropriate comments, behaviours and assaults of a sexual nature from a small yet insistent section of men. This behaviour was unfortunately normalised by society, with excuses like “Sure he was only having a laugh” or “He had a few drinks on him” or similar such attempts at justification. It is now incumbent that we, as a society, ensure that the generations to follow, our daughters, nieces, granddaughters, younger colleagues and friends, do not endure this level of objectification again because it is not acceptable to be treated in such a manner, and it never was. – Yours, etc,
NIAMH REGAN,
