Sir, – Why do we go hillwalking? Surely it is for the peace and tranquillity of the Irish countryside, the only sound being that of sheep on a hillside, the twittering of birds and the drone of the occasional bee.
Yesterday at Glensoulan on the Wicklow Way, heading towards Djouce, the peace and tranquillity were disturbed by the “thump, thump, thump” of music, if you’ll pardon the expression, from a radio a young lady was carrying.
It seems impossible for some people to be away from technology even for a few hours and just enjoy the outdoors. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – I agree with your editorial (August 31st) regarding the need for a multi-pronged attack on obesity. Might I suggest that, for a start, more people might open the door and just start walking? Simple, free, enjoyable exercise and good for mind and body.
It would help greatly also if Ireland had allowed for responsible access to our beautiful countryside, as walkers enjoy in other developed nations. The Labour Party’s modest Access Bill 2013 has been languishing in a Leinster House limbo for over two years! At least, let’s discuss this peculiarly Irish issue. – Is mise,
