How Covid rules are working

Sir, – Returning on the train from Cork to Dublin on July 23rd, reduced seating capacity was being adhered to as recommended. However, in completing my journey to Bray on a Dart train it was open season in the carriage, with no restrictions on seating.

There were no signs anywhere to indicate that such a requirement was necessary.

Social distancing has definitely gone out the window!

Sir, – Given the Government’s excellent move to require those dining indoors to produce a proof of vaccination or equivalent, surely it is time for Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris to announce a similar scheme for third-level colleges?

A vaccine pass system for all staff and students would enable full attendance at college lectures and labs by students, with all staff – academic and otherwise – also able to enjoy a full-time on-campus work regime once again.

Surely this must be put in place as a matter of urgency?

A chara, – Six continuous days of trying to get through to the Covid vaccine certificate helpline and holding on for two hours until the line rings out. I am calling for a person with an underlying condition travelling overseas on the August 5th, who has been fully vaccinated since June 16th but who has not received the certificate to date. Stress levels are getting very high.

Whatever happened to, “You are caller number 17 and your wait time will be approximately 75 minutes”? Why can I not email or tweet my request for assistance? Why can I not use “snail mail”, it would be 10-times quicker and more efficient than the current service?

Sir, – I am not a virologist, however medical reports in the media state that being vaccinated guarantees nothing except statistically reduces one’s chances of dying from Covid-19.

In light of this, vaccination certificates give a false sense of security and the inspection of same for indoor dining and drinking only increases the amount of time of close contact between customers and staff and therefore rather then being a means to protect staff, inspection of vaccination certificates will actually unnecessarily create further risk.

Surely in order to have the safest indoor social environment for both staff and customers everybody must be treated as a potential carrier of Covid.
