Madam, - I was delighted to read your report (March 24th) of the award of one of India's highest honours to Sister Cyril Mooney. The Rainbow programme at her Kolkata school has given hundreds the chance of a better life, and the many other programmes she has founded have reached out to countless thousands more across India and indeed around the world.

I was one of the first Rainbow children - my father having died suddenly, my mother and two sisters found ourselves on the street. We got some help from Mother Teresa but Sister Cyril gave us shelter, safety and the gift of an education normally only available to the wealthy.

I am now married to an Irishman and live near Sister Cyril's home in Co Wicklow. My two sisters can look forward to a life my parents could never even dream of. Her total dedication to education, and her great love and pride in her adopted India are an inspiration to us all. - Yours, etc,

PROTIMA MUKHERJEE, Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow.
