A chara, – Lord Kilclooney suggests that in the run-up to Ireland's next referendum, eyebrows should not be raised if senior members of the British government were to visit and campaign openly for one side over the other (May 20th). It is difficult to imagine a circumstance in which the outcome of an Irish referendum would hold as much risk for the UK as a vote for Brexit would for the entire island of Ireland. However, if the circumstances were indeed reversed, David Cameron would be perfectly entitled to make the feelings of the British government clear. Those who may not vote on decisions which directly affect them retain the right to appeal to those who may, even if they are in a different jurisdiction.
