Madam, - "As an Englishman", Francis Bailey (February 7th) observes that Ireland has no particular reason to be "ashamed of its record in the war". In any case, this Irishman is glad his country abstained from the carnage (70 million dead).

The foregoing prompts a reflection. Were all countries to become neutral - ie non-aligned and non-belligerent - there might be no more inter-state wars. If this is indeed the case, then the more neutral nations, the better for "international peace and security". - Yours, etc,
