Sir, – Your article on Irish cattle exported to Turkey calls out for immediate action ("Irish cattle slaughtered in conditions 'breaching EU law'", April 1st). The graphic images that I have already seen are shocking and include cattle from Ireland being unloaded in Turkey and the Middle East. Unbelievable cruelty.
These cattle were in our own green fields surrounded by birdsong and go into a nightmare of the long journey from Ireland, are unloaded covered in their own dung and are then trucked on in the hot sun to savage treatment and methods of slaughter. This is shameful, and action is needed now by farmers and farming organisations here. –Yours, etc,
FRANK KAVANAGH,

Sir, – Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed must stop live animal exports immediately; cruelty like this cannot be tolerated in Ireland or beyond.
Such practices must be exposed and have to be stopped. – Yours, etc,
CAITRIONA LAWLOR,
Mount Merrion,
Co Dublin.
