Madam, - The Truth and Reconciliation Commission is the title of a body established in South Africa after apartheid. Do we Irish lack the courage to adopt the same title for the new group on the legacy of the Troubles to be established by Lord Eames and Denis Bradley? From Martin McGuinness's remarks reported today (June 25th) it would seem that he does.
Mr McGuinness repeats the established Sinn Féin tactic of trying to hide from the truth by blaming others - the British government, the Irish Government, the Northern Secretary of State, the UDA.
Did any of these murder the little Irish boy in Lord Mountbatten's boat or our 11 fellow citizens on Remembrance Day in Enniskillen or Mrs McConville in Divis flats? The truth to be faced is that all these were done by an illegal organisation of criminals called the IRA.
The new committee cannot promote reconciliation if it is diverted into talking about "The Troubles." - Yours, etc,
G FERGUSON,
