Luas and Connolly Station

Madam, - Once again, the critics of Luas have got it wrong!

Madam, - Once again, the critics of Luas have got it wrong!

Opposition spokesmen have described the situation at Connolly Station as a farce (The Irish Times, January 9th) though it is not clear exactly what they want.

Engaging in the public consultation when the Docklands line was first proposed, I emphasised the importance of serving Connolly Station properly.

The planners could have been tempted to bypass the station to give a more direct route to the Docklands.

Fortunately, the Railway Procurement Agency agreed with the priority of serving Connolly. It put forward two options for public comment. Both have snags; there is no perfect solution.

The chosen option requires the trams to reverse at Connolly. The other option, via Harbourmaster Place and Sherriff Street, would need some single track (with the risk of delays), because of the narrow space it would have to fit into. Reversing the trams is probably the lesser inconvenience.

So it appears that the RPA got it right. I don't know exactly what is included in the figure of €30 million, but we can be sure it is not all wasted money. - Yours, etc.,
