Sir, – I can no longer sit idly by while our Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources fails to mention the word "nuclear" in its plan for a transition to a low-carbon future ("¤22 billion to turn State into low-carbon economy", News, February 16th).
The country is likely to be largely dependent on wind and solar energy, with a moderate contribution of wave, tidal and biomass eventually. In this situation, it is irresponsible and, I think, dishonest to ignore the recent development of a variety of small modular reactors (SMRs).
These could be a necessary and cost-effective back-up to cope with fluctuations in supply and demand. – Yours , etc,
