Sir, – If the main objection to Michael D Higgins running for re-election is that he broke an election promise should the same objection not apply to every other member of the Oireachtas seeking re-election to public office? Until such a self-denying ordnance is passed, we are stuck with the old system of trying to elect the people we think are best qualified for the job. – Yours, etc,
PADRAIG YEATES,
Portmarnock,
Co Dublin.
