Madam, - As I returned home on Saturday evening last, just before 10pm, the odour of extinguished candles in my home greeted me. It was then that I remembered the global "Earth Hour" initiative which my daughter had observed in my absence.
Her comment that no one else in our quiet suburban cul-de-sac had appeared to remember this important hour surprised me. I had been out for a meal with a friend and even the incentive of subdued candlelight to contribute in some way to this had been no inducement to the restaurant where I ate.
While a lot of attention was drawn to our clocks going forward at 1am on Sunday morning and there was a notice to this effect where I ate, a very low profile was given to this "Earth Hour".
Why, I wonder, when climatically our agenda worldwide should be global warming, was this initiative effectively ignored? - Yours, etc,
GLYNIS STANLEY, Kingswood, Tallaght, Dublin 24.
