Sir, – There is a suggestion that the failure of the banking inquiry to apportion blame is the result of the rejection of the referendum on Oireachtas inquiries.
In 2011 the electorate voted against allowing politicians greater powers, powers that have been the preserve of the justice system.
I doubt that the people would believe politicians to be independent, particularly when it comes to investigating political failures.
I therefore suggest that any re-running of the referendum is unlikely to succeed until trust in the political system, and in our politicians, significantly improves. – Yours, etc,
