Outdated postal code plan

Sir, – It’s now eight years since this country first set up an organisation to introduce a postal code system. It has been at tender stage for an unprecedented 26 months and still not a wisp of white smoke.

The whole process, in my opinion, should be abandoned.

An Post, which already has its own very efficient sorting system, does not want or need a postal code system; so introducing one would be a waste of further money – on top of that already wasted.

What this country does need is a good location code system, so that businesses – and more importantly – emergency services, can get to their destinations promptly, thereby saving both lives and CO2.

I call on the Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte (who inherited this mess from two previous ministers) to abandon this process and set about introducing a location code system. The mechanics to introduce this system are already available from private enterprise and could be introduced at a fraction of the cost already incurred in pursuing an out-dated postal code. – Yours, etc,
