Sir, – I read with incredulity that Dublin City Council has a new plan for Dublin's O'Connell Street that will protect its "character" ("O'Connell St plan to ban new adult shops, chip shops and arcades", October 7th). Unbelievably, the scheme does not give the council power to shut down the "less appropriate uses" of premises. O'Connell Street is currently a mess of fast-food outlets, tourist shops crammed with tat and overpriced tourist buses. Some plan! – Yours, etc,
