Sir, – People have always considered excessive speeding unacceptable as it is known to cause crashes resulting in injury or fatality ("Speed-over-distance cameras to go live on stretch of M7", News, April 25th). The presence of speed vans with resulting fines and penalty points have helped in deterring motorists from exceeding speed limits. Yet excessive speeders on motorways are commonplace, with drivers placing too much trust in their driving skills or failing to understand the risks involved.
As the eyes of the law are not always available to change dangerous driving behaviours, the speed-over-distance cameras on the M7 are a welcome addition in making the road safer for everybody and are likely to appear on more motorways before long. Drivers should understand that arriving at a destination as quickly as possible is less important than staying within the speed limit. – Yours, etc,
KEVIN McLOUGHLIN,
