Sir, – The concerns expressed by Paul McCarthy (April 3rd) on the dreadful state of telephone booths in the Republic reminded me of the now defunct red telephone boxes which were a pervasive feature of the social landscape here in the UK. As a scruffy young kid in the 1950s I got no greater pleasure than entering such red boxes in my street and randomly pushing “Button B” to check if any unused coins would be forthcoming. The sheer delight in getting the odd penny returned will not be experienced by today’s youth, for all their high-tech games. It is sad to see such vehicles of communication fade away. What concerns me is where will Clark Kent now go to don his Superman kit? – Yours, etc,
FRANK GREANEY,
Formby,
Liverpool.
