Sir, – The notion that the Book of Kells was started in Iona and finished in Kells (An Irishman's Diary, February 9th) is certainly a popular theory, and in diplomatic terms a highly convenient one, but alas not necessarily the most plausible. Several folios in St Matthew's gospel are unfinished, having been prepared for elaborate decoration that was never carried out. If brought to Kells to be finished, why then was it never finished? – Yours, etc,
