Sir, – Now that officers from Óglaigh na hÉireann have completed their tremendous work on the Flags for Schools initiative, can I suggest that they extend their efforts and visit Dublin City Council (DCC).
All schoolchildren are now aware that the national flag should be displayed in the open only between sunrise and sunset, except on specific defined occasions. Nevertheless a practice of flying the flag 24/7 over public buildings has developed and the minimum requirement that such flags be appropriately lit during hours of darkness is not being observed.
Please view City Hall from Parliament Street for confirmation.
When the army officers have finished their work with DCC officials they might also remind the representative members of that body of their obligation to respect the flag in accordance with protocol at all times – not least at election counts.
Yours, etc,
PAUL REARDON
Drumcondra,
