Sir, – The submission to Dublin City Council in relation to the Draft Development plan 2022-2028 by the Docklands Business Forum to relocate Dublin Port, as reported by Arthur Beesley ("Docklands companies call for Dublin port to be moved", News, February 15th), is most welcome.
The protectionist response from Eamonn O’Reilly, the chief executive of Dublin Port, displays a lack of imagination and is evidence that the State’s key priority of housing is neither fully understood nor embraced across the State and semi-State sector.
To put it into context, Dublin Port occupies approximately 640 acres, which is roughly the same size as the combined area of the suburbs of Sandymount, Ranelagh and Harold’s Cross at 669 acres.
We absolutely need to solve the immediate housing crisis, but we also owe it to future generations to take a 100-year view of Irish housing. The time to begin is now. – Yours, etc,
MARK FITZGERALD,
Chairman,
Sherry FitzGerald,
Dublin 18.
