Sir, – Has anyone else noticed the very significant price increases that were imposed in most eateries when the VAT rate on food returned to 13 per cent? It seems to have been used as an excuse to hike prices on the back of the continuing boom. It’s no surprise these days to see even the humble “hang sangwidge” edging up to, or going past, €6 a go, with coffee running to €3 or more for a decent-sized cup. Maybe I’m living in the past, but handing over the best part of €20 for two sandwiches and two cups of coffee, even in small towns here in rural Ireland, is pushing it a bit. – Yours, etc,
JOHN DUNNE,
