Madam, - I am bemused at the brouhaha being raised, first by Michael D. Higgins, and now by Gay Mitchell. The proposal to have "Éire Ireland" on name plates does not change the name of the State. It simply follows the practice of other countries who have two official languages, which are also official languages of the European Union, to have both languages on the name plates. Nobody is confused by "Suomi Finland" or "Belgie Belgique".
The only thing likely to confuse other members of the union is why it has taken us almost 40 years to take this obvious step. - Is mise,
