Madam, - In deference to my southern neighbours who are objecting to Ireland's geographical inclusion in the British Isles, may I propose an alternative which should offend no one?
Let us rename our archipelago the Welsh, Irish, Scottish and English Isles, which would be abbreviated to WISE Isles and be boldly modern in this acronymic age. - Yours, etc,
DESMOND McGIMPSEY, Bangor, Co Down.
Madam, - David Christopher feels that objecting to the term "British Isles" is petty-minded.
Maybe I am one of the petty-minded whom Mr Christopher has in mind, but I can assure him that there are many people living in Ireland who object to a term which effectively labels them as "British Islanders".
It might be more acceptable to all to continue calling the islands of Ireland and Britain by their respective names.
If not, maybe the Government would consider a referendum to amend our constitution to include references to the "Irish Isles". - Is mise,
PROINSIAS MAC FHEARGHUSA, An Uaimh, An Mhí.
