Sir, – Minimum unit pricing is a blunt but effective tool in curtailing the ravages of alcohol excess. Alcoholism permeates every aspect of society, having greatest impact on the medical and judicial systems.

To this end, government spending and resource allocation towards each individual in this State is negatively affected by the burden of managing an unnecessary problem.

The current administration should be commended on pursuing such a proactive endeavour for the benefit of all, in the face of much public opposition. – Yours, etc,

Dr MERVYN HUSTON,

Athlone,

Co Westmeath.

A chara, – Will the slogan calling for a border poll be “A slab of cans in one hand and a ballot box in the other”? – Is mise,

MICHAEL NASH,

Dublin 18.

Sir, – We shouldn’t look at the increased price of alcohol as a health measure but rather a tourist initiative under the banner of Visit Northern Ireland. – Yours, etc,

DAVID CURRAN,

Knocknacarra,

Galway.

Sir, – I believe the new minimum unit pricing for alcohol will have quite an effect on Irish people’s attitude to Brexit. Henceforth, far less interest will be paid to the Northern Ireland Protocol and far more to the price of Northern Ireland alcohol. – Yours, etc,

BRIAN AHERN,

Clonsilla,
