A chara, – Is there a bus stop near the Merrion? I fear someone may have just been pushed. – Yours, etc,
EOGHAN Mac CORMAIC,
Baile Uí Mhaoláin,
Cill Chríost,
Co na Gaillimhe.
Sir, – I see from The Irish Times (News, July 27th) that our new ambassador to the UK was to be appointed as a result of a “memo to be brought to Cabinet” by the Minister for Foreign Affairs. If that is due process for the selection of an ambassador, surely it is also appropriate for a far more junior diplomatic role? – Yours, etc,
TREVOR BOATE,
Rathfarnham,
Dublin 16.
Sir, – May I propose Mannix Flynn for the vacant part-time UN post in New York? Having, against all the odds, defeated Dublin City Council’s latest madcap scheme, he will now have some free time on his hands. As a recognised playwright, author and champion of the ignored and unheard, who better to promote the need for freedom of speech? Are there any Fine Gael beanos I could attend to further his cause? – Yours, etc,
KARL MARTIN,
Dublin 13.
Sir, – I think it’s fair to suggest that Katherine Zappone’s party is getting greater attention in August than it might when there is more real news to be covered. For this observer the most newsworthy element of the reportage is that one of the attendees was one of Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan’s “joint chiefs of staff”.
How many chiefs of staff does the leader of a relatively small political party need? – Yours, etc,
PAT O’BRIEN,
Crossmolina,
Co Mayo.
Sir, –Following days of controversy, Katherine Zappone has decided not to accept the position of UN special envoy. What a pity and what a lost opportunity for our nation. Yet another own goal for Ireland and another victory for our corrosive politics of national begrudgery. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL F KEOGH,
Knocklyon,
Dublin 16.
Sir , – Is it not unusual for a legislator, in this case the Tánaiste, to ask the hosting Merrion Hotel to interpret the legislation for him? – Yours, etc,
CHARLES SMYTH,
Kells ,
Co Meath.
Sir, – It would appear that there is one law for those in power and one set of guidelines for the rest of us. – Yours, etc,
DANIEL GRIFFIN,
Dunboyne,
Co Meath.
Sir, – “Former minister Katherine Zappone may have bees eminently qualified for the job” states an obvious typo under her photograph (News, August 5th). The question is, who got stung? – Yours, etc,
TONY CORCORAN,
Dublin 14.
