Madam, - Contrary to what some may have believed, in 1984 Pope Benedict XVI, then Cardinal Ratzinger, stated that "the doctrine of Limbo has never been a definitive truth of the faith but merely a theological hypothesis". The Catholic Church has, in fact, always entrusted to God's Divine Providence those thought to be in Limbo. The new understanding, therefore, is consistent with Catholic thought and does nothing to undermine the reality of original sin or the necessity of infant baptism.
- Yours, etc,
PAUL KOKOSKI, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
