Sir, – I have visited many African countries and had the pleasure of visiting El Salvador last summer, a country of beautiful rolling green hills, old colonial towns and warm, welcoming people. It is also a country whose citizens struggle daily with gang violence and poverty. In any African country I have had the privilege of visiting, I have been treated with graciousness, warmth and respect. There, citizens too struggle with poverty, corruption and crime, yet endeavour with admirable tenacity to improve their lives. Could Donald Trump not pause to consider, even briefly, the role over many years which numerous US administrations have played in ensuring that too many of the countries he so egregiously maligns remain poor and powerless? His boorishness is truly boundless. – Yours, etc,
PATRICIA MULKEEN,
