Madam, - I travelled the main road from Dundalk to Newry this lunchtime and was appalled whilst driving through Ravensdale to witness a "gentleman" urinating brazenly and unconcernedly at one of the several lay-bys in this area.
Regardless of his particular situation, he had just a passed bar/restaurant and there was a hotel just ahead of him. His open disdain for the travelling public was quite breathtaking.
Unfortunately, his attitude and actions are far too familiar, as anyone who uses this road frequently can attest. It is almost commonplace to travel to Dublin for any major sporting or other event and observe groups of young men urinating without any apparent shame along the roadside.
Such lack of respect for themselves and others is among the more disquieting and disgusting features of modern Irish society.
Apart altogether from the incalculably damaging image portrayed, must we sink so low? - Yours, etc.,
MATTHEW CUNNINGHAM. Newry, Co Down.
