Madam, - Maxi Rodriguez's marvellous goal for Argentina against Mexico last Saturday night was probably the best thing I've seen on a football pitch since Dennis Bergkamp's goal for Holland against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Cup, when the non-flying Dutchman controlled a 50-yard pass with the deftest of touches, side-stepped his marker and shot the ball into the far corner of the goal, all in one lovely flowing movement.
Let's hope Argentina go on to emulate Brazil's achievement in the World Cup in Sweden in 1958, when they became the first South American side to win the tournament on European soil - a feat that hasn't been repeated since. - Yours, etc,
JOE PATTON, Chapelizod, Dublin 20.
