Your Fitbit should know where you are

Sir, – As a user-experience professional who specialises in wearable technology I was intrigued by Diarmaid Ferriter's article about his wife's Fitbit fitness tracking device (Opinion, July 23rd).

Whatever about the dynamics of the privacy and security of his wife’s fitness data as recorded, the gamification example cited by the author is a depressingly poor example of localisation and personalisation, so important to the contextual world of user-experience these days.

Instead of an announcement on reaching a certain goal that yells, as her Fitbit does, “Mahalo! You’ve earned the Hawaii badge”, I would have at least expected “Good woman! You’ve earned the Croagh Patrick badge. Barefoot”.
