Elected TD profiles
James Geoghan

James Geoghegan (38) becomes the first Fine Gael TD in Dublin Bay South since the resignation in 2021 of former minister Eoghan Murphy.

He ran in the byelection to succeed Mr Murphy but came second to Labour’s Ivana Bacik.

First elected to Dublin City Council in 2019 for the Pembroke area and re-elected in 2024, he was also elected Lord Mayor of Dublin in June this year and viewed as an able chair of council proceedings.

A son of two former Supreme Court judges, he grew up in Ranelagh and now lives in Clonskeagh with his wife Claire, and three children. A practising barrister, he has a particular focus on public and Constitutional law, as well as civil proceedings related to crime.

He serves on the Housing Strategic Policy Committee and the Southeast Inner City Drugs Taskforce and is a board member of the National Maternity hospital.
