England white ball captain Eoin Morgan is set to retire from international cricket with an announcement expected on Tuesday, according to reports in the UK.
Dublin-born Morgan, who played for Ireland between 2006-2009 before switching allegiances, led England to their maiden World Cup win in 2019.
Since taking over as captain in 2015, Morgan has been credited with changing England’s attitude to the shorter formats. As well as overseeing that World Cup success, he has also led the T20 side to number one in the world. He is the country’s top run getter in both white ball formats with 6,957 and 2,458 runs respectively.
His 225 ODI caps and 115 T20s is also an England record.
Before representing England, Morgan played 23 ODIs for Ireland, scoring 744 runs at an average 35.4.
Despite being captain, Morgan has faced questions on his place in the England side of late after injuries and a lack of form have curtailed his ability to impact games with the bat. In a recent series against the Netherlands, he recorded back-to-back ducks before missing the final game with a groin problem.
He has stated publicly his inability at this stage of his career to play multiple games in quick succession.
Morgan is also without a half-century in his last 26 innings.
Jos Buttler, current vice-captain, is the favourite to replace him as skipper.
England are next in white ball action in a three-game T20 series against India - who are currently in Dublin to play Ireland - starting on July 7th. Three ODIs follow immediately after.
