Colleges Football/ Abbey CBS Newry 1-10 De La Salle Macroom 1-8: Abbey CBS, Newry, qualified for a first All-Ireland final at Dr Cullen Park on Saturday.
De La Salle led 1-2 to 0-1 after eight minutes, with David Goold scoring a goal. Once Abbey midfielders Kevin McKernan and Richard Gilmore started to provide a good supply of ball to the forwards, the game changed.
By half-time Abbey were level, 0-6 to 1-3, and within two minutes of the restart substitute Ruairí Cunningham kicked the northern champions into the lead. Kevin Dyas stormed forward for a point and when Richard Gilmore added another Abbey held a three-point lead.
In the 38th minute Cathal Magee crashed the ball to the De La Salle net for a 1-9 to 1-4 lead. Macroom rallied and Donal O'Sullivan and Seán Kiely kicked a combined four points to cut the Abbey lead to a point (1-9 to 1-8). But Abbey's Niall Devlin sealed victory with an injury-time 45.
