Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted he will not alter the way he plays just because of booing from opposing fans. The 22-year-old has often been jeered at English grounds since the World Cup, and the abuse has been stark over the past four days at Tottenham, where supporters felt he dived to win a penalty, and Arsenal, where he captained Portugal to a 2-0 friendly win against Brazil.
The Manchester United winger has been accused of trying to deceive match officials but has consistently denied such behaviour and maintains he is unaffected by the boos. "I don't care about that," he said, adding that he will not be deterred from drawing opponents into tackles. "I'm not going to change my way of playing. Others play like this."
Ronaldo's every touch was jeered on Tuesday by what appeared to be a mixture of Brazil and Arsenal fans. "It's not the first time, you should have noticed," said the former Sporting Lisbon player, who has ignored the treatment and been a big reason for United's rise to the top of the Premiership. "For the last year I've been booed, but it's the same, I'm always very calm.
"This victory has a special taste because it was against Brazil," he added. "The result is the most important thing. It's always good to beat the number one in the world. It gives you motivation."
Despite Ronaldo's insistence that he is calm about the jeering, there is a sense of unease at Old Trafford that he might seek to leave next summer for Spain. There is interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, though Barca's technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, played down the significance of a meeting he held with Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, while in London for the friendly between Portugal and Brazil.
"I didn't come here to hold a summit for Cristiano Ronaldo and I want to make that very clear," Begiristain said. "I came to see Jorge Mendes because he is a friend of mine. I have known him for many years and he represents various players in our squad. The trip was planned a long time ago."
There is little doubt, though, that Ronaldo would be welcome at Camp Nou.
That was emphasised by Deco, the Barcelona and Portugal midfielder. "He is among the best in the world and every team wants him," he said. "It will be difficult for him to leave Manchester United but I think he would choose Barcelona.
"He is like (Lionel) Messi in the desire he has to triumph. They are difficult to stop in a one-on-one because of their touch, speed and strength. Leo is more talented, but Cristiano is quicker and stronger. They are two players I love."
