UCD ... 1 Bray Wanderers ... 1: A late own goal from Colm Tresson salvaged a point for UCD and prevented Bray Wanderers going joint top of the Premier Division table.
Bray appeared good value for the three points as they led from Jason Byrne's 46th minute goal. But Robert Doyle, who joined UCD from Wanderers in the close season, was put through by Sean Finn on 86 minutes. Doyle's shot was parried by Bray goalkeeper Matt Gregg, but the rebound hit Tresson and went into the net.
Bray could still have won the game but for a brilliant save by Barry Ryan from Thomas Morgan in stoppage time. UCD struggled to get out of their own half for long spells of the first half as Bray ran the game.
However, Wanderers' chances in front of goal were few and far between as UCD also generally defended well and tried to hit on the counter-attack. Bray's left winger Paul Forsyth was the star turn before the break, perhaps inspired by the watching presence of Irish international Damien Duff in the crowd.
And it was fitting that Forsyth should open up the UCD defence to create the first real chance of the game on 16 minutes.
Having skipped by Alan Mahon, Forsyth's low cross caused problems for UCD goalkeeper Ryan, who could only parry the ball away with his feet. Stephen Fox, following up, should have done much better than drill the ball feebly wide.
Fox was left frustrated again within three minutes when, again having been set up by Forsyth's neat footwork, he delayed a shooting chance and put his effort over the top. UCD almost punished Matt Gregg's poor clearance on 26 minutes as Finn headed wide from Robbie Martin's cross. Five minutes later Forsyth set up Fox who was thwarted by the feet of the College goalkeeper.
Good going forward, Bray continued to look shaky at the back, however, and UCD exposed them four minutes before the break. Morgan gave the ball away cheaply in midfield to let Alan McNally in one-on-one with Gregg. But the midfielder's chip floated over the crossbar.
With Barry O'Connor on for Fox at the start of the second half, Bray took just 25 seconds to take the lead. Morgan's ball forward was flicked on by Keith Long for Byrne who showed good composure to turn and shoot low past Ryan from 15 yards.
