World Rankings: Newly-crowned US Open champion Angel Cabrera improved 24 places to 17th in the latest World Rankings after his winning effort at Oakmont Country Club over the weekend.
The burly Argentine was able to hold off the challenges of world number one Tiger Woods and number three Jim Furyk to win by one shot after a closing 69 gave him a five over 285 winning total.
Cabrera is also the fist Argentine winner of a major championship for forty years since Roberto De Vicenzo won the Open at Hoylake in 1967.
With their tie for second place at Oakmont Woods extends his lead over Phil Mickelson at the top of the rankings while Furyk closes in on the left hander.
Cabrera became the fourth successive overseas winner of the second major of the year to follow in the footsteps of South African Retief Goosen, New Zealander Michael Campbell and Australian Geoff Ogilvy.
This side of the Atlantic, the St Omer Open is a dual ranking event between the European Tour and Challenge Tour and was won by Spain's Carl Suneson. It was the Spaniard's maiden win after 18 years on tour and he climbed 307 places to 339 in the latest rankings.
Padraig Harrington keeps a place in the world's top 10 (10th) despite missing the cut at Oakmont. Darren Clarke's slide continues as he dropped to 110. Graeme McDowell is 12 places further down the rankings even though he made the cut at Oakmont. Paul McGinley is 145th.
