LIT 3-23 DCU 0-10:Davy Fitzgerald's LIT comfortably advanced to the quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup as they eased to a facile victory over a DCU side who came into this contest in Limerick knowing that a draw would be enough to send them through.
But they were never in the reckoning as Tipperary All-Ireland senior winner Seamus Callanan led the way for a balanced LIT side.
LIT raced into a 1-11 to 0-5 interval lead as there was no way back for DCU as Callanan turned on the style. The Drom Inch clubman was the perfect target man at full forward and fired over frees from a variety of angles and distances.
Callanan, doubtful through injury, hit 1-3 in the opening half, including a goal from a 20-metre free, and added a further 0-6 before he retired in the final quarter with the game up.
Only two DCU players, Seánie McGrath and Pádraig Brehony, managed to find the target.
Impressive captain Seán Collins and Jamie Fitzgibbon got LIT’s other goals.
