CRICKET: Railway Union's Kenny Carroll is the only uncapped player to be named in the 15-man Ireland squad for the upcoming ECC European Championship, which takes place in Glasgow early next month, reports James Fitzgerald.
Carroll has been in prolific form with the bat of late, scoring four centuries this season and averaging nearly 50. He won the player of the tournament at the ECC European Under-23 Championship which finished on Thursday and could be selected to open the batting during the senior equivalent, which takes place from August 4th to 9th.
Opening bowler Boyd Rankin has also earned a recall to the Irish side, having won just two caps as a 19-year-old in 2003. He impressed selectors during the under-23s tournament, finishing as joint leading wicket-taker. He has clearly benefited from his stint at Derbyshire under the guidance of bowling coach and former England Test seamer Mike Hendrick.
