Schools Leinster Junior Cup Quarter-finals/Castleknock College 6 Terenure College 5: It was nip and tuck all the way with Castleknock College just about deserving to get the better of Terenure College in the Powerade Leinster Schools Junior Cup quarter-final at Donnybrook yesterday.
Terenure were quicker to settle and Castleknock fullback Daniel King got his fingertips to an inside pass from Terenure number eight Robert Duke that was otherwise destined to produce a clear run to the line for right wing Harry Moore.
It was only a temporary reprieve as fullback Gavin Douglas attracted defenders towards him and captain Ross Williamson was left alone to make the line.
Outhalf Mark Coffey reduced the gap with a superbly struck penalty in the 25th minute and this seemed to give Castleknock the impetus or confidence to pick up their game.
Inexplicably, they decided to run a penalty that would have given them the lead. It came to nothing and they went in at the break 5-3 in arrears.
Terenure took the ball into contact on the resumption and the backs manoeuvred Douglas into space, but he took out the corner flag on his way to glory.
Castleknock recognised the error of their ways when Coffey nailed a far more difficult kick in the 40th minute for what would prove to be the match winner.
Secondrow Daire Heneghan exploded through the middle to set up Gavin McIntyre's dangerous grubber and chase. Coffey twice opted not to go for goal from a kickable position. They nearly paid the price when Williamson was penalised for a double movement in the act of scoring deep into injury-time.
