BASKETBALL/Schoolgirls final: The girls from Coláiste Íosagaín collected the biggest schools prize of all at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght yesterday, as they lifted the under-19 All-Ireland schools cup after defeating Ursuline, Sligo 45-33 in the decider.
The key to the Stillorgan school's success lay in the fact that they were able to spread their scores around so well, with Joanne Ní Mhathúna (11), Kate Ní Mhaoláin (9) and MVP Fiona Ní Mhaoinaigh (16) all scoring well.
The school fell short of completing a double, however, as they lost 36-19 to Holy Faith, Clontarf in the under-16 A final.
It was the first time Holy Faith have secured an A title, with Leah Westbrooks and MVP Becky Woods magnificent for the Clontarf school throughout.
Meanwhile, the day's outstanding individual performance came in the under-19 B final, where Castletroy College star Rachael Clancy scored an amazing 22 points to help her side defeat Loreto Foxrock 42-36.
The Limerick school are sure to be frequent visitors to the venue over the next few years, as most of their panel are still only 16.
Their under-16 side also made it to the finals, but lost the under-16 B decider to Our Lady's/St Patrick's, Knock, Belfast, on Tuesday.
