Centre Graeme Fennell proved the match-winner for CUS when they advanced to the semi-finals of the Leinster Schools Junior Cup (Section A) with a 12-point win over Kells CS at Skerries.
Fennell scored both his side's tries, one in each half, to help overcome a physically stronger Meath side. His first-half breakthrough came after 17 minutes and followed good work by number eight Graham Carty. Outhalf Ray Naughton added the points.
Kells, however, with their number eight, Aidan McEntee, and out-half Alan Hickey conspicuous, hit back 12 minutes into the second half with a try by flanker David Callaghan.
After Naughton had added a penalty, Fennell again cut through the Kells defence for his second try with 10 minutes remaining. Naughton was once more on target with the conversion to secure a well deserved victory.
The draw for the pools of the European Student Championship (December 15th-19th) has been made with the four Irish representatives, Trinity, Queen's, UCD and UCC, playing in Durham, Cardiff, Toulouse and Cork, respectively.
