BOXING: Featherweight Bernard Dunne will not find out until late next week if he will be given back his licence to fight professionally under the auspices of the New York State Athletic Commission.
Dunne, who was not passed fit for his third professional bout against Tony Spinoza 11 days ago in Buffalo, New York, when a "spot" showed on a pre-fight brain scan, hopes to have conclusive tests completed and viewed by his own specialists and those in the New York Commission over the next seven days.
It was thought the 22-year-old former Irish amateur champion would find out yesterday whether scans taken at UCLA medical centre in Los Angeles would clear him to continue on his professional career. However, the full complement of specialists required to view and discuss the scans was not available.
It was hoped Dunne, who has signed up with Sugar Ray Leonard Productions, would fight again on November 9th in Oklahoma City but according to his Irish manager Brian Peters, December 6th looks the more likely date once the "spot" on the scan has been fully explained and the Irishman is given his licence back.
Peters is confident the medical tests Dunne has undertaken will be sufficient to convince the commission that boxing will constitute no danger to his health.
