Formbook points to Tarfaa victory

The revamped Punchestown gets its first airing since its rain-soaked baptism at the April festival this afternoon

The revamped Punchestown gets its first airing since its rain-soaked baptism at the April festival this afternoon. This card may be comparatively underwhelming to that but Tarfaa looks one for punters to get stuck into.

This Night Shift colt ran a debut full of promise at Leopardstown three weeks ago when runner-up to Filitosa and the second division of the Elverstown Maiden looks a suitable winning opportunity.

Tarfaa was only seventh into the straight, but ran on encouragingly even though the front running Filitosa had flown. Khaysan was a length behind Tarfaa in third and is another who should pick up a race in time, but the formbook points to Tarfaa and the formbook should be right.

Khaysan's trainer John Oxx should have landed the first division by then though as Little Giant, second to Desert Magic at Tralee with the subsequent winner Man Of The Sea third, looks up to beating the Aidan O'Brien-trained Zinedine.

Probably the most interesting contest is the Knockadoo Hurdle where the Arkle Trophy runner-up Hill Society is the highest-rated runner.

Sawa-Id tops the weights and will like very soft ground while Enda Bolger's promising Swiss Tune returns to racecourse action after an absence. In contrast, Tidjani runs only a week after finishing fourth to Cairncross at Listowel and although Frank Berry's horse is not a prolific winner, he is fighting fit, acts on the soft and is capable of a decent finishing burst.

The consistent Willyever had a frustrating time of it at Listowel with two second placings, but will have his supporters despite top-weight in the Beggars End Handicap. However if Final Reminder, the second reserve for this race, manages to get a run he should prove difficult to beat.

Final Reminder wasn't particularly fancied when returning from a break at the Curragh recently but ran a blinder in a 27-runner, seven-furlong handicap when second to Rush Brook. He should have come on for that and if given the chance should go close.

Conclave, who beat Global Diamond in a Beginners Chase on soft ground at Kilbeggan recently, has Philip Fenton on his back and has a clear chance in the Ingoldsby Handicap Chase while Sun Strand, fourth here in April, is the selection in the bumper.

Punchestown will hold a precautionary inspection at 7.00am tomorrow morning to see whether the card can go ahead.

The course is raceable at present but heavy rain is forecast overnight.

John Barry hopes to run his stable's flagbearer Largesse in the Fishpools Furnishings Godolphin Stakes at Newmarket tomorrow.
