Golf Digest: Jim Furyk fired a five-under-par 67 to take the first round lead at the $1 million PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Poipu Beach, Hawaii on Tuesday.

Furyk, a part-time resident of Hawaii, won in 2003 and will carry a one-shot lead over Australia's Geoff Ogilvy into the final round of the 36-hole event.

World number one Tiger Woods, who has won this event a record six times in his seven appearances, sits third after firing a two-under 70, one shot better than Mike Weir (71, one-under).

Woods has won the unofficial tournament six of the eight times it has been played.

Coughlan off to good start

Cork's Claire Coughlan fired an opening one-under-par 71 to be just three shots off the lead after the first day's play at the Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School at La Cala Resort in Spain yesterday.

Coughlan's round included three bogeys in four holes from the 10th, but birdies on the sixth, 11th, 15th and 17th saw her safely to a tie of 10th place overnight.

Martina Gillen carded a brave, two-over-par 74 which included a wretched triple bogey on the 13th, her fourth hole.

Wie tries again, Fisher now pro

Michelle Wie has shrugged off criticism of her forays into men's golf before this week's Casio World Open, saying: "Get used to it." Wie (17), will be attempting to make the cut for only the second time in 12 professional men's tournaments on her second visit to Kochi, on Japan's Shikoku island. "I want to play a lot of men's events next year," she said. "I feel that as long as I play well it will work out."

England's Oliver Fisher (18), the youngest player to appear in the Walker Cup and who last week became the third youngest player to survive the European Tour qualifying school, has turned professional and has joined IMG.

Curtis in reach of card

Spain's Emilio Rodriguez and Australian David Merriman lead the European Seniors Tour Qualifying School Finals in Portugal on seven under par after yesterday's third round over the Pestana Golf resort.

The top 14 at the end of today's fourth round earn a card to the 2007 European Seniors Tour.

Ireland's John Curtis is in a strong position at tied for 15th after a third consecutive 71.

American Terry Dill, who is aiming to win his first European tour card at the age of 67, is tied 11th after a 71.
