Today's other stories in brief
Caffrey waits
The one remaining first-round fixture in the O'Byrne Cup takes place at 7.30 this evening when Dublin take on DCU under the floodlights of Seán Moore Park in Ringsend (Clanna Gael Fontenoy's ground), reports Ian O'Riordan.
Dublin manager Paul Caffrey won't finalise a team until just before throw-in, as he is still regrouping his panel following Saturday's annual Dubs Star clash, which saw Dublin prevail on a 3-17 to 0-12 scoreline thanks to two goals from David O'Callaghan.
DCU have also still to confirm their line-up, and had stated some concerns about their ability to field a team because it is exam time at the college, although they will compete as scheduled.
What Caffrey has announced is Colin Moran will captain his senior football side for 2007 - continuing the role he was in fact meant to play last year.
O'Neill plays on
Veteran attacker Kevin O'Neill looks set to throw in his lot with Mayo for another season after lining out with the county team in a challenge game at the weekend.
There was some speculation that O'Neill - who scored two goals in last September's All-Ireland final defeat by Kerry - would retire, but he played for Mayo against Connacht club champions St Brigid's on Sunday.
O'Neill (33) figured in an experimental Mayo side as manager John O'Mahony gave run-outs to 2006 All-Ireland under-21 medallists Mark Ronaldson and Ger Cafferkey.
Support for Dolan
The prospect of former Roscommon footballer Frankie Dolan joining Westmeath looks to have increased with the news that Westmeath manager Tomás Ó Flaharta has admitted he is a fan.
"There is a lot of speculation about Frankie Dolan and all I can say to you is that Frankie Dolan is not training with us and I'm not aware of any transfer papers that have been signed or anything like that," said O'Flaharta, after Sunday's O'Byrne Cup victory over Athlone Institute of Technology.
But O'Flaharta went on to say: "I think Frankie Dolan is a very fine footballer and I have no problem talking to anybody at all.
"Despite what other people say, I think there is plenty of football left in him yet. He is only 28 years of age. I think you never lose your touches or your skill or anything like that so if you're willing to work hard it is half the battle and like I said I would talk to anyone."
Discussions are understood to have taken place between Dolan and some Westmeath figures but Dolan has remained tight-lipped on the move. He is concentrating on next month's clash between his club, St Brigid's, and Crossmaglen Rangers in the semi-final of the All-Ireland club championship.
Leitrim game refixed
The Connacht FBD League game between Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) and Leitrim, which was scheduled for last Sunday, will be played later in the month.
The match venue was changed twice but the referee called the game off on Sunday because the pitch in Mervue in Galway city was unplayable.
"Unfortunately, at this time of year there are always going to be some difficulties with pitches," said Connacht secretary John Prenty."In this case the match was switched from Pearse Stadium to Castlegar but then on the morning of the match had to be switched again to another venue.
