Brennan demands more effort

GAA president Nickey Brennan yesterday issued a strong plea to managers and players to assist in their efforts to improve the promotion of games, clearly inspired by Waterford's refusal to fulfil any media requests ahead of Sunday's National Hurling League final against Kilkenny.

"One county, and more specifically one manager, didn't want to participate in any promotion," said Brennan, "and he wasn't from my county. We should have had a hurling final promotion this week, let's be quite frank about that. We can only go so far on this, and to be honest, me trying to promote it is a joke anyway. We're nobodies when it comes to this. It's the managers and the players that count. I don't understand this idea that by not talking to the media it may somehow help their cause."

Brennan added that the GAA had gone to extra efforts to promote the national leagues this year, staging weekly press briefings: "We are using players a lot more for various events. I want to see more of our players getting the media spotlight, instead of all these Champions League players, who quite frankly couldn't hold a candle to our people in all angles of our sport."

Waterford unchanged

Waterford manager Justin McCarthy has named an unchanged team from the semi-final victory over Cork for Sunday's National League final. Opponents Kilkenny are expected to name their team tonight.

WATERFORD (SH v Kilkenny) C Hennessey; E Murphy, D Prendergast, J Murray; T Browne, K McGrath, A Kearney; M Walsh, S Molumphy; E Kelly, S Prendergast, S Walsh; J Mullane, D Shanahan, J Kennedy.

Mulligan's red rescinded

Tyrone forward Owen Mulligan has had the red card which he received for a "sliding tackle" against Mayo in the NFL match on April 8th rescinded. He is now available for selection against Fermanagh in the Ulster SFC on May 20th. Mulligan appeared before the GAA's Central Hearings Committee last night.
