Okay, thanks for spending time with us for some or all of the afternoon. The provincial hurling championships didn’t really catch fire this year - certainly in comparison to how Munster especially has played out in recent seasons - but they still provided some memorable moments over the last few weeks.
The Cork-Limerick decider has the potential to be a real epic in two weeks. And who knows, it might prove to be the second of three championship meetings between the teams this year.
Keep an eye on irishtimes.com for more news, reports and colour from today’s matches. Tomorrow’s newspaper will also be full of analysis from all the weekend’s games. Until the next time, take care.
Interesting stuff here from Joe Canning on moving the Leinster SHC final out of Croke Park.
Seán Moran’s match report from Parnell Park has landed:
"Galway made their history at a packed Parnell Park on Sunday with a very first championship win away against Dublin.
“The match itself was a more prosaic affair and the home team at no stage looked likely to maintain their pristine record in the fixture.
“Former Dublin manager Micheál Donoghue returned to the capital with Galway and comfortably achieved the victory. They dominated the puck-outs and their forwards were sharper and more accurate. Even the five-point margin was illusory, as a more reflective scoreline was undermined by the concession of a couple of injury-time goals.”

There were also two provincial finals played in the TG4 women’s senior football championship where both Galway and Kerry retained their respective titles. But my god-daughter Cara has informed me the biggest result of the day in the women’s game was actually in the Meath Division Four U15 final where Carnaross beat Longwood 3-9 to 3-4. You are unlikely to find that info on other blogs!
But for Galway and Kerry, today’s wins will be seen merely as stepping stones for what they hope will be a long summer.

The Leinster Council are offering 20,000 free tickets for underage teams to attend the provincial senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Galway at Croke Park on Sunday, June 8th. The Joe McDonagh Cup decider between Kildare and Laois will also take place at Croke Park as part of a double bill that afternoon.
Leinster GAA stated: “The initiative is part of Leinster GAA’s ongoing commitment to youth participation and community engagement, providing young players with the opportunity to experience the excitement and atmosphere of Senior Hurling Championship match days.”
Eligible groups must consist of a minimum of 10 children (U14 or younger), and must be accompanied by at least two supervising adults per group (1 adult per 10 children). Applications must be submitted by club secretaries no later than 12pm on Wednesday, 4th June 2025. All tickets must be booked in advance and are non-transferable.
Leinster chairman Derek Kent added: “This is a celebration of our young players and an investment in the future of our games. We want every child involved in GAA to feel connected to the bigger picture — to see our players in action, feel the energy of championship days. By offering 20,000 free tickets to our players, we’re not only giving them a great day out — we’re showing them they belong to something special.”

71mins: Cork 2-23 Waterford 1-21
Cormac O’Brien with a wonderful long range score for the Rebels. That should do it.
70mins: Cork 2-22 Waterford 1-21
Diarmuid Healy with an important point for Cork. It’s a four point game and four minutes of added time have been announced.
69mins: Cork 2-21 Waterford 1-21
And another long distance free converted by Stephen Bennett.
66mins: Cork 2-21 Waterford 1-20
Stephen Bennett with another converted free for Waterford. They are refusing to go away here.
64mins: Cork 2-21 Waterford 1-19
Shane Kingston and Patrick Horgan with points for Cork, either side of a Stephen Bennett free for Waterford.
60mins: Cork 2-19 Waterford 1-18
Jack Prendergast and Darragh Fitzgibbon trade points. Austin Gleeson has been introduced for the last ten minutes by the Waterford management.
GOAL for Waterford. A great response from the visitors, Stephen Bennett scores their first goal of the afternoon. Dessie Hutchinson has pointed just two minutes earlier, so it’s game back on here perhaps - though Cork remain strong favourites to see it out.
57mins: Cork 2-18 Waterford 1-17
50mins: Cork 2-18 Waterford 0-16
Shane Barrett adds a point. Cork are pushing for home now, it’s hard to see Waterford reel the Rebels in over the remainder of this contest. Cork have all the momentum.
GOAL for Cork. Patrick Horgan scores Cork’s second goal of the afternoon. Brian Hayes had pointed just moments earlier.
48mins: Cork 2-17 Waterford 0-16
47mins: Cork 1-16 Waterford 0-16
Cork get motoring again with points from Seamus Harnedy and Patrick Horgan. They look the better team.
44mins: Cork 1-14 Waterford 0-15
Stephen Bennett makes no mistake with a free. Waterford have now scored three on the bounce.
38mins: Cork 1-14 Waterford 0-14
Waterford needed to stop taking on water and a point apiece from Seán Walsh and Patrick Fitzgerald might have done that, for now at least.
36mins: Cork 1-14 Waterford 0-12
Patrick Horgan adds a pointed free.
GOAL for Cork. Brian Hayes smacks the ball to the Waterford net in the opening minute of the second half. Great start to the resumption by Cork. A real challenge now facing Waterford, who will be playing against the wind in this second half.
36mins: Cork 1-13 Waterford 0-12
Here is Denis Walsh’s half-time update from Cork:
“Having played with a gale in the first half Waterford trail by a point at the break, 0-12 to 0-13. Just like last week in Thurles they got off to a blistering start and led by 0-5 to 0-1 after ten minutes, but they never threatened a goal and didn’t put Cork under nearly enough pressure moving the ball out of defence.
“Cork’s attack still isn’t functioning like it was in the league and Conor Prunty is doing a terrific job on Brian Hayes, but Alan Connolly has scored three points from play, including the score to give Cork the lead just before half-time. Hard to see Waterford winning from here without goals.”
Davy Fitzgerald’s interview after Antrim’s loss to Offaly today.
HALF-TIME: Cork 0-13 Waterford 0-12
35mins: Cork 0-13 Waterford 0-12
Alan Connolly edges the home side in front. Given the strength of the wind against them, the Rebels will be happy enough with this, you’d imagine.
33mins: Waterford 0-12 Cork 0-12
Alan Connolly brings the teams level again. Seven times and counting.
33mins: Waterford 0-12 Cork 0-11
Kieran Bennett uses the wind to help carry his effort between the Cork uprights.
30mins: Waterford 0-11 Cork 0-11
Seamus Harnedy brings the sides level for the sixth time during this first half.
30mins: Waterford 0-11 Cork 0-10
But yet again Waterford respond - points by Stephen Bennett and Jamie Barron have the visitors back in front.
29mins: Cork 0-10 Waterford 0-9
Shane Barrett puts Cork back in the lead.
27mins: Cork 0-9 Waterford 0-9
Patrick Fitzgerald and Patrick Horgan trade scores. The sides are level again.
22mins: Cork 0-8 Waterford 0-8
Patrick Horgan levels the game again.
20mins: Waterford 0-8 Cork 0-7
That’s an impressive response by Waterford - Mikey Kiely and Seán Walsh sending over a point apiece to push the visitors back in front.
18mins: Cork 0-7 Waterford 0-6
Cork hit the front for the first time after scores by Patrick Horgan and Shane Barrett edge the Rebels ahead of Waterford. Cork are playing against the wind in this first half.
17mins: Waterford 0-6 Cork 0-5
Mikey Kiely and Seamus Harnedy swap scores.
15mins: Waterford 0-5 Cork 0-4
Patrick Horgan pops over a free, three on the bounce now for the Rebels. The gap is down to one.
13mins: Waterford 0-5 Cork 0-3

11mins: Waterford 0-5 Cork 0-2

7mins: Waterford 0-4 Cork 0-1

Seán Walsh adds another for the visitors.
3mins: Waterford 0-2 Cork 0-1
Patrick Horgan opens Cork’s account with a free.
2mins: Waterford 0-2 Cork 0-0
Billy Nolan with a free from downtown. The wind is going to be a major factor in this game, it seems.
1mins: Waterford 0-1 Cork 0-0
Jack Prendergast with the opening score. Waterford have the benefit of the wind in the first half.
Nicky English sets the scene for us as Cork prepare to face Waterford:
[ Wounded Cork must put meltdown behind them or the season is overOpens in new window ]
Denis Walsh is in Páirc Uí Chaoimh for us today as Cork face Waterford in arguably the most significant fixture of the hurling weekend. Denis has just sent us this update from a seemingly chilly Leeside:
“On a showery, overcast afternoon there is a perishing wind blowing towards the Blackrock End in Páirc Uí Chaoimh that is bound to have a huge bearing on the outcome. In a puckaroud an hour before the game Cork’s injured wing forward Declan Dalton was able to reach that goal from the opposite 45 with about 10 metres to spare, without swinging at full throttle.
Waterford make one change from their published line-up with Kieran Bennett replacing Iarlaith Daly at corner back, the Lismore player reportedly suffering from a groin injury. Survival in the championship is on the line for both teams. Waterford must win; Cork would progress with a draw."
Here are the immediate thoughts on Galway’s win over Dublin from Seán Moran at Parnell Park.
“Dublin‘s record of never having lost a home championship match to Galway tumbled at Parnell Park. Although the final margin was five, 0-29 to 3-15, it little reflected the reality of a second half which the visitors dominated. Late goals from a Seán Currie free and a scrambled finish from Conal Ó Riain helped to put a more dignified look on a scoreboard that with less than 10 minutes to go, had 12 between the teams. A clinical third quarter, won 0-9 to 0-4, opened up a five-point lead for Galway and the match ran away from Dublin until the late consolation flourish. Galway have been improving every match since going down so diffidently against Kilkenny in the opening match. The counties will meet again in next month’s Leinster final. Dublin qualify for the preliminary All-Ireland quarter-finals.”
Offaly have retained their status with battling victory over Antrim. The Saffrons left themselves with a mountain to climb after going down to 14 early in the first half. They never gave up the fight but ultimately Offaly held firm.
Full-time: Offaly 3-15 Antrim 1-16
TJ Reid scored a late goal for Kilkenny but it made no difference on the outcome of their game against Wexford. At the final whistle, Wexford were well in control: Wexford 2-19 Kilkenny 1-15.
FULL-TIME: Galway 0-29 Dublin 3-15
Galway will face Kilkenny in this year’s Leinster SHC final.
Dublin have scored two late goals in Parnell Park. Seán Currie with a green flag score from a free in the 69th minute and then in injury-time Conal Ó Riain added another. Galway still lead by five though and the seconds are ticking away.
72mins: Galway 0-29 Dublin 3-15
Some drama in Tullamore where 14-man Antrim staged a comeback with a James McNaughton goal in the 65th minute reducing the gap to the minimum, 2-14 to 1-16. But Offaly’s response has been emphatic, the home side worked the ball up the field and Killian Sampson smashed home a goal at the other end of the field.
After 67 minutes, Offaly 3-14 Antrim 1-16
Seán Currie hits a free for Dublin but this game is over as a contest now. Galway are on their way to a Leinster final meeting with Kilkenny. Dublin won‘t come back here.
65mins: Galway 0-28 Dublin 1-14
62mins: Galway 0-28 Dublin 1-13
Conor Cooney puts Galway 12 points ahead.
Tom Monaghan extends the Tribesmen‘s lead. Galway are pulling away here. Dubs not at the races today.
61mins: Galway 0-27 Dublin 1-13
Cathal Mannion extends Galway’s lead with a free, that’s his eighth point of the day.
60mins: Galway 0-26 Dublin 1-13
Galway remain on course to face Kilkenny in the Leinster final. They lead by nine with just over ten minutes remaining. The Tribesmen have been the much better team in this second half.
58mins: Galway 0-25 Dublin 1-13
TJ Reid has just popped over his third point of the day for Kilkenny but they still trail Wexford. After 57 minutes, Wexford lead the Cats, 1-16 to 0-11.
It hasn‘t been a classic at Parnell Park by any stretch of the imagination but Galway won‘t care if they can hold out for the next 20 or so minutes and claim a spot in the provincial decider. They lead by four.
52mins: Galway 0-19 Dublin 1-12
Rory O’Connor’s goal early in the second half has helped Wexford lead 1-14 to 0-9 after 49 minutes. Wexford are playing for pride really, Kilkenny have already booked their place in the Leinster final.
Back in Parnell Park, Galway have started the second half very strongly. The visitors are using the wind and they have pushed six clear.
44mins: Galway 0-18 Dublin 1-9
Offaly now lead 2-12 to 0-13 after 41 minutes at Parnell Park. Antrim have a real uphill task to turn this around. They have been playing with 14 men since early in the first half when Niall O’Connor was sent off on a straight red card.
Here are the half-time highlights from the Dublin-Galway clash.
Here is Seán Moran‘s view on what he has watched at Parnell Park so far:
‘Consensus would be that the home side needed more than parity, playing into the wind in the second half. In fact, the way they played for the first quarter, it may have come as a relief to Dublin to be on level terms so poor was their accuracy and touch at the start. A goal from Rian McBride got them back into the game after Galway’s superior precision had established a 0-6 to 0-1 lead. Much better needed from Dublin in the second half. One other item of interest is that Galway are lucky that Daithi Burke received only a yellow card for his challenge on Conor Burke in the 26th minute.’
And updates from elsewhere. It is half-time in all the Leinster SHC games.
Wexford 0-12 Kilkenny 0-5
Offaly 2-9 Antrim 0-11
HALF-TIME: Dublin 1-7 Galway 0-10
36 mins: Dublin 1-7 Galway 0-10. A Seán Currie free brings the Dubs back level.
Yellow card for Padraic Mannion this time. Two players in the Galway full-back line now booked.
34mins: Galway 0-10 Dublin 1-6. A close range free popped over by Cathal Mannion puts Galway back in front.
27mins: Dublin 1-6 Galway 0-8. A neatly hit free by Seán Currie edges the Dubs back in front.
Yellow card for Dáithi Burke for a high challenge on Conor Burke. He’s possibly lucky it’s only a yellow.
Those two early goals could prove crucial for Offaly in that relegation play-off against Antrim. A long way to go in all of these games, but so far it is advantage Dublin, Offaly, Wexford.
Updates from elsewhere after 20 minutes of action:
Offaly 2-3 Antrim 0-6
Wexford 0-8 Kilkenny 0-4
Dublin have momentum now, they’ve just followed up on the goal with three consecutive points to suddenly go from five behind to one in front.
19mins: Dublin 1-4 Galway 0-6
GOAL for Dublin. They needed that. Rian McBride smacks home the game’s opening goal.
16mins: Galway 0-6 Dublin 1-1.
15mins: Galway 0-5 Dublin 0-1. Galway now four ahead and they are playing against the wind in this first half. The Dubs need to get a foothold in this game.
Concannon goal chance just whizzes wide. Galway have started well, they still lead by two.
10mins: Galway 0-3 Dublin 0-1. Brian Concannon with his second of the day pushes the visitors ahead.
Dublin 0-1 Galway 0-1. Dublin have hit five wides already.
Five minutes gone in Parnell Park, no score yet.
Here are the hurling previews as Seán Moran makes his calls on the games in both Leinster and Munster.
And here is our first update from Seán Moran, who is in Parnell Park for Dublin v Galway:
“Rain holding off and sun peaking out in Parnell Park. Dublin manager Niall Ó Ceallacháin makes three changes to the listed 15. Cuala goalkeeper Seán Brennan comes in, in place of Eddie Gibbons. Na Fianna forward AJ Murphy and Rian McBride from St Vincent’s start with Ronan Hayes and Paddy Dunleavy dropping to the bench. Micheál Donoghue, on his return to Parnell Park having managed Dublin for two years, makes just one change to his Galway panel with Declan McLaughlin replacing Colm Molloy in the number 26 jersey.”
Joe Canning takes a look at what might unfold in the hours ahead:
“Surprise results have been a feature of the Leinster championship in recent years, but that hasn‘t been the case this season. In this game, there is no outcome that would surprise me.”
Ahead of the Dublin v Galway clash, we spoke to former Dubs goalkeeper Alan Nolan on the rivalry between the sides and some of the dramatic last-day encounters of recent years - with current Galway manager Micheál Donoghue experiencing it from both dressing-rooms.

There was plenty of football action yesterday too but we are going to build up to today’s hurling fixtures. It’s showery here in Dublin right now so could be greasy at Parnell Park when Dublin host Galway at the sold-out Donnycarney venue.
