Mayo will begin the search for a new football manager following James Horan’s decision to step down following Saturday night’s defeat to Kerry in the All-Ireland football semi-final replay in Limerick.
Horan had signalled that this would be his last year in charge due to family and business commitments but refused to confirm his decision in the post-match press conference.
He later announced it to his players and Mayo released a one-paragraph statement through their Facebook page.
Horan took over the job in 2011, winning four consecutive Connacht football finals and leading Mayo to back-to-back All-Ireland finals in 2012 and 2013.
They lost both deciders, to Donegal and Dublin respectively, and are still without an All-Ireland win since 1951.
